CALLS TO ACTION
STOP A FEDERAL TAX!
Comparing “oranges to oranges” (in this case milligrams of nicotine in vapes vs cigarettes,) if HR 5715 is enacted, vapes would be taxed at a rate approximately 5X higher than cigarettes! Vaping consumers will be paying up to 6¢/mg of nicotine compared to 1.1¢/mg in cigarettes.
The tax hike is just as bad, if not worse, for nicotine pouches, snus, and moist snuff — all reduced risk products compared to cigarettes!

CASAA Rhode Island Call to Action Gets a Mention
Thank you for the plug, Mr. Castor and the States Newsroom. It’s great to see reporters using the resources available at casaa.org!
“At least one group has started to rally against the possible [80% Rhode Island] vape tax. On Jan. 22, 2024, [CASAA] posted a prewritten email in opposition to the proposed tax, which people then can send to their representatives.”
CASAA’s Rhode Island Call to Action is linked below. The prewritten email mentioned in the article is 100% customizable, so be sure to add your own personal story about how THR/vaping products have helped YOU!
Yeah, I stock up here in MA every other Thursday – a 12 pack lasts me a month or so, a bottle of whisky lasts me 6 months to a year. I go to Rhode Island or CT for vape stuff or tobacco, it’s half the cost because of taxes.

IN THE NEWS
Technically True But Very Misleading
The article says: “Teenagers are far more likely to vape or use e-cigarettes than their parents or teachers.”
This is a true but very misleading statement. Nearly 16 million adults vape vs. 1.56 million teens and 29 million adults still smoking far outnumbers teen vaping & smoking combined. The number of adults who still smoke clearly face far greater health risks than the number of teens vaping.

TOBACCO CONTROL
Well-Meaning Doc Is Misinformed
Pediatrician says he’s troubled by the “growing epidemic” of flavored “tobacco” [ie. tobacco-free e-cigarettes] use, because the “tobacco industry” is targeting kids with “bubble gum and cotton candy” flavors.
- There’s actually NO “growing epidemic.” Youth e-cigarette use peaked in 2019 and has dropped back to pre-2014 levels. It was clearly a temporary fad.
- Big Tobacco doesn’t sell vapes in “bubble gum and cotton candy” flavors. The claim that the “tobacco industry” sells these flavors is a blatant attempt by anti-tobacco/nicotine zealots to demonize the products. Independent vape companies developed these flavors years before BT ever sold vapes, because most vape companies were started by adults who quit smoking with vaping and their adult customers requested those flavors.
- Furthermore, while teens who vape do use flavors (as do adults,) increased flavor use among teens who vape has not led to increased vaping:

Public Health Dogma Should Be Protected?
Professor Jim McCambridge said, “Public health needs to be protected from policy interference and associated interventions w/in science by the alcohol and tobacco industries, so that the integrity of science is preserved.”
Well, we say DITTO for ideological anti-nicotine orgs masquerading as “science-based public health.”
It’s no surprise that the author of the article linked below, Christopher Snowdon, reveals that the “standard template of a [Professor Jim] McCambridge study is to take a statement from an ideological opponent, find someone who disagrees with it, declare it to be a lie and then urge policy-makers not to listen to such people.”
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are dozens of academics masquerading as public health experts who are borderline insane. https://t.co/Jwjohc14x1

Proof Kids Don’t Know Facts
At a recent rally for a flavor ban in Maine, a Cony High School Sophomore said, “I believe that flavored tobacco products are among the most dangerous things we are facing as students in Maine.”
Except he’s very wrong. CDC data (see graph) shows that you are wrong. High School students more often use substances far more dangerous than flavored nicotine vapes and pouches.
Also at the same event, an adult flavor ban advocate unironically said, “Smoking kills more people than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders and suicides combined each year in Maine.”
Which is why we want people who can’t or won’t quit to switch to low risk, smoke-free alternatives (which have been shown to be more effective when they’re non-tobacco flavors.)
If Maine prohibits ‘flavored’ nicotine vapes, ~30% of adult vapers will relapse to smoking. FYI, smoking kills people.
So the question is, literally: How many adults is it acceptable to murder… to reduce teen daily nicotine vaping from 2.6% to ~2.0%?https://t.co/Ge56elExe2 pic.twitter.com/PiV6QDJq28

Exaggerating the Risks of Nicotine Pouches
“Chaffee says that ‘nicotine in and of itself has some risks’. He explains that it can elevate the heart rate, raise one’s blood pressure and be harmful to those with underlying heart conditions.”
According to UC Davis Health, the exact same can be said of caffeine.🤷♂️
(See: Q&A: What effect does caffeine have on your heart?)

The More You Know
Note the switcheroo tactic being used in this tweet by Truth Initiative.
First they lie by saying it’s a “myth” that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking during pregnancy. In truth, recent studies have found that vaping is less harmful than smoking during pregnancy.
Then they switch to talking about the safe amount of nicotine during pregnancy.
Very sneaky.
RESEARCH
What Scientific Bias Looks Like
The study authors state, “This study underscores the necessity of exploring other brain areas controlling the negative aspects of nicotine exposure.”
They can’t ever see any “necessity of exploring” the positive aspects of nicotine, which exposes their anti-nicotine bias.
Dr. Paul Newhouse: “In our studies we find it [nicotine] actually reduces blood pressure chronically. And there were no addiction or withdrawal problems, and nobody started smoking cigarettes. The risk of addiction to nicotine alone is virtually nil.” https://t.co/FcpuMSQNKu

Two New Studies Find E-cigarettes More Effective Than Traditional Methods
A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine involving about 1,100 participants who smoked at least half a pack of cigarettes daily for the past 5 years found nicotine #vaping was more effective than nicotine gum and worked as well as varenicline (Chantix.)
READ MORE: E-Cigarettes May Be Better Than Nicotine Gum for Quitting Smoking
Additionally, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine of 1,246 participants who smoked at least 5 cigarettes per day found nicotine #vaping “was significantly better” for SMOKING cessation than receiving standard counseling and a voucher for any therapy.
Of course, there’s little to no coverage of these studies by the mainstream media.
Is Google’s News Search down? I’m unable to find @washingtonpost, @nytimesheaIth and @APHealthScience articles on the @NEJM study, “Electronic Nicotine-Delivery Systems for Smoking Cessation” & the powerful accompanying editorial on tobacco policy. https://t.co/FCQrIKVZkV

Can’t Really Call This ‘Research’ Scientific
The Tab, a tabloid-style youth news site, determined half of students are “addicted” by just asking “Would you say you’re addicted to vaping?” and in small print stating that “addiction” is “An inability to stop or control your usage.”
Like most college students wouldn’t also say that about caffeine? (Note to “news” outlets: self-reported assessments by young people of their “addiction” isn’t science.)

INTERNATIONAL
The Most Important Question
The author of this article looks into the source of illicit vapor products flooding the UK market. He talks about vapes from China and shady retailers. Unfortunately, a very important question went unasked. That question is “Why is there even such a booming black market for vapes in a country that’s been extremely pro-vape?”
The answer is previous (and just arbitrary and unscientific) regulations such as nicotine strength and container size caps. Consumers clearly want higher nicotine strengths, more convenience with larger capacity for their pods and lower prices, and the illicit market is filling that demand. Banning disposables and flavors or tightening regulations will only row that market.
“Industry insiders revealed to VICE that as many as 40 to 50 percent of vapes in the UK are currently illicit – as in, imported illegally and not in compliance with current UK regulations.” Watch that skyrocket once there is no legal market to compete. https://t.co/cNtUCeJnKc
